luggage.jpgThere are a small percentage of all bags that get passed on from airport to airport, plane to plane that get’s lost only to be found month’s later in some far away place you haven’t even heard of. It is frustrating enough to have to get new clothes to replace the one’s you thought you lost and an insult to find your returned bags have been soaked in rain as they were waiting to be found a few weeks later.

There are a couple of tips you can use to avoid such incidents that can save you a lot of frustration and anxiety. First of all, as you check in and settle down, try to get all those tags off the bags so they are a clean slate when they get processed again on your way home. Be vigilant when the handler at the check-in counters ensuring the right tags are attached to the right bags. Confusion can arise if there are a deluge of passengers, especially if the bags all look the same (color, shape and size). You can also get hold of some attractive ribbons, tags or anything that would make your bag more visible and not just like any brown bag on the carousel. Addresses and names should be visible inside and on the outside of your bags so that if they are indeed lost, you can be contacted for prompt return of your luggage. Get enough travel insurance that has enough coverage to afford you a decent change of clothes if they are needed. Bring valuables in your hand carry bags to avoid theft. You should also seal all unused pockets and zips to avoid people from sticking contraband that can cause you a lot of delays and discomfort as officials try to determine their origin and your contesting their accusations. This usually happens with drugs and other contraband which smugglers go to extreme lengths just for a buck at your own expense.
